Now I’ve finally given up smoking I’ve been able to get properly on the belly-busting, which is something I’ve wanted to do for a while, but could never be arsed.
I’ve had an Apple Watch for years, since they first came out, but rarely wore it until I upgraded to the series 4, which has been excellent. One of the new features they have is the ability to compete with fellow watch wearers on weekly competitions to see who can move the most, close their rings and score the most points.
I’ve been competing with my brother on and off for a couple of months, but it was a lazy affair, but last week one of my oldest friends got a watch and shit got serious!
First off, I upped my daily goals to match my brothers and my friends – this was to increase the move feature from 350 – 450- per day, which was quite a jump. Secondly, both my brother and my mate were regularly getting 600 points per day, which is the maximum, and means they’re doubling their goals. I’ll write a proper blog about the watch soon, as I think it’s really come into its own with Series 4, but for now, it’s about moving…
Now, I like to compete, and I like to win, and as I was competing against two different people who were going to put up a fight, I had to get serious.
Monday was a bank holiday in Germany, and I got up early and hit the bike so I’d have a free day ahead of me. I hadn’t done a proper bike ride for a while, so I was happy with one time around the lake and 26kms
I’m loving swimming at the moment, and had managed to do 600m last week, so on Tuesday evening I was determined to hit 1000m, and I did it! I was very pleased with myself.
There were thunder and lightning storms in Leipzig but I wasn’t going to let that stop me. Another trip around the lake complete.
I have a pretty flexible job, and as I was on daddy duty in the evening, I popped out at lunch for a dip. I was aiming for 1000m again, but given this is my 4th day of doing some exercise in a row, my body was starting to complain a little.
Still, 500m – happy with that.
Popped out again on Friday lunchtime and pushed it to 750m.
I was exhausted, and I had to do some shopping for a holiday that is coming up, and I’m looking for a new bike, so I decided that I’d have a day off.
I did go to the pool in the evening, but it was with my kid to play. I didn’t have the watch on and wasn’t thinking about exercise. I also didn’t score maximum points this day.
My body was really starting to feel it today, so I had a lazy day planned. Come 2 o’clock I was feeling guilty though, so I thought I’d go out for a leisurely ride. All was going well and after one lap of the lake, I thought I’d do another, and after the second, I thought I’d do another! So my quick ride turned in to a 2.5-hour, 43km affair. Nice.
Smoking is still off the agenda. Boom!
And here’s the annoying part. This past week I’ve done more exercise than I’ve basically done the rest of the previous year, or maybe longer, and I put on weight and my body fat index has gone up! That is so annoying and demoralising!
Basically, I’ve been doing more so eating more, and I’m also compensating for not smoking by snacking, which results in most of the food I’m stuff down my face is bad food. So many Oreos and ice creams and Haribo.
Man, I was really looking forward to getting on the scales this week, and totally dejected after I did.
All in all, I’m really happy that I was able to push myself to do everything I did this week. I won my two competitions on the Apple watch, which I was pleased with, and I’m starting to get the hang of swimming, which means I’m seriously considering entering a triathlon!
My body is feeling it though, I’m walking funny. Perhaps going all in is a bit much and I should plan in some rest days. I’m sure that’s what the advice would be, but I’m an all or nothing kinda person.
The competitions are set for the coming week on the watch, and I intend to do everything I can to win again! However, I have a busy week and a sore old body, so we shall see.
How about you, did you meet your goals this week?
